Hiking Mt. Fuji
Mt Fuji is famous all over the world it has been on my bucket list for a long time. I’ve lived in Japan for 3 1/2 years and even lived in Shizuoka for 2 of those years but still had never been able to make the journey. With such a small window during the summer, typhoon days and so many people with the same goal, I wondered if I would ever be able to watch the sunrise from the summit of Mt. Fuji. This year I decided to make this dream a reality. So I planned for months, collected the gear I needed and made my safety plan.
富士登山
富士山は世界中で有名で、私はずっと前から「一生に一度はやってみたいこと」リストに入れていました。日本には3年半住んでおり、そのうち2年間は静岡に住んでいましたが、それでもなかなか富士山に登る機会がありませんでした。夏の間は登山可能な期間が非常に短く、台風の日もあり、同じ目標を持つ人も大勢いるため、果たして富士山の頂上で日の出を見られる日が来るのだろうかと思っていました。今年、私はこの夢を現実のものにすることに決めました。そこで数ヶ月かけて計画を立て、必要な装備を揃え、安全対策も万全に整えました。
The day finally came for me to start my journey but this was not the usual hike from the 5th station to the summit. I wanted to honor this amazing adventure by doing the full pilgrimage from sea to summit. This made my journey a lot more difficult but I was determined.
The first day I walked for 8 hrs from Suruga Bay in Fuji City to a campsite at the base of Mt. Fuji in Fujinomiya City. It was difficult and very humid, luckily it was also cloudy. I was thankful when I finally reached the campsite at the end of the day. The second day I took the bus to the 5th Station to save 5 hours. From the 5th station I hiked to the 8th station where I rested for the night. The next day, early in the morning I started my journey to the summit. It was very cold, crowded and I was still sleepy.
いよいよ旅に出る日がやってきましたが、これは五合目から山頂への通常の登山ではありませんでした。私は、海から山頂までの完全な巡礼の旅を成し遂げることで、この素晴らしい冒険に敬意を表したかったのです。これにより旅ははるかに困難なものになりましたが、私は決意を固めていました。
初日は、富士市の駿河湾から富士宮市の富士山麓にあるキャンプ場まで、8時間歩いて移動しました。道のりは厳しく、湿度も非常に高かったのですが、幸いにも曇り空でした。一日の終わりにようやくキャンプ場に到着したときは、心から安堵しました。2日目は、5時間を節約するためにバスで五合目まで向かいました。五合目から八合目までハイキングし、そこで一晩休みました。翌日、早朝に山頂への旅を始めましたが、とても寒く、人でごった返しており、私はまだ眠くてたまりませんでした。
Finally I made it to the summit and was able to watch the sunrise. It was beautiful beyond words and I will never forget this experience. One day I might go to Mt. Fuji again but I’ll start from the 5th station with everyone else!
ついに山頂にたどり着き、日の出を見ることができました。その美しさは言葉では言い表せないほどで、この体験は一生忘れません。いつかまた富士山に登るかもしれませんが、その時はみんなと同じように五合目から登るつもりです！
